Highlands and Islands celebrate science and engineering
- 15th Apr 2016
Over 100 young people from 20 local schools got stuck in to science and engineering at the Highlands and Islands Celebration of Engineering and Science event held at the Eden Court Theatre (Inverness) on March 11th.
At the Celebration, which is ran by the Young Engineers and Science Clubs (YESC) and is a project of the Scottish Council for Development and Industry (SCDI), the National Space Academy was represented by one of our Scottish Lead Educators, Allan Reid from Elgin Academy. Allan joined local companies such as Morrison Construction, Caledonian MacBrayne, Highlands and Islands Airports and Denchi Power to showcase hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) activities and challenges. As part of this Allan built a comet to show the students what a comet actually is and why it is important we understand more about their origin and make up. To see how you can build your own comet, please see our resources.
Allan has had a busy year so far: as an outstanding and inspirational physics teacher he was asked by the Scottish Government to be part of a marketing campaign aimed at encouraging graduates into teaching physics. You can see Allan in the video here
