Lisa Colford
“There are lots of different career options and pathways available, as we highlight within our programmes. It’s important for young people to see the wide range of exciting opportunities open to them and understand that there isn’t just one route into the space sector.”
Lisa originally studied for a HND in Complimentary Therapies and is now the Business Growth and Relationship Manager with the National Space Academy!
At the office
Lisa began her journey at the National Space Centre in Leicester in 2002 as a member of Space Crew, gaining first-hand experience of engaging with visitors and providing support. Over the next decade, she developed her career across the organisation, becoming a team leader within the catering and retail departments. In this role, she played an essential part in the Centre’s day-to-day operations, helping to ensure everything ran smoothly behind the scenes while delivering a high-quality experience for guests.
In 2009, Lisa moved into the bookings team, where her role shifted to organising visits and events for schools, colleges, and groups such as Brownies. It was here that she developed a deeper connection with the Centre’s educational mission, playing an important role in creating memorable experiences for thousands of young visitors.
Over the years, Lisa came to know the National Space Centre inside out. This extensive knowledge, combined with her operational expertise, made her perfectly suited to take the next step in 2012, when she joined the National Space Academy as an administrator.
Lisa’s career continued to evolve, and in 2022 she stepped into the role of UK Projects and Network Manager. In this position, she led a diverse portfolio of projects across the UK and supported a thriving network of exceptional teachers, helping to strengthen the Academy’s reach and impact.
The following year, she became the Programme Manager, taking on responsibility for overseeing the Academy’s programmes and ensuring their continued success.
Today, Lisa works as the Business Growth and Relationships Manager. In this role, she focuses on building strong partnerships and gaining a deep understanding of organisational goals. She works closely with companies, government bodies, and education providers to develop long-term relationships and enhance the National Space Academy’s profile within the space sector.
Away from the office
Away from the office, Lisa enjoys staying active, spending time with family and friends, and exploring new places through travel whenever the opportunity arises.
We asked Lisa...
Given the chance, would you go to space?
I think the view of the Earth and the stars would be breath-taking and this would be a chance of a life time. However, I don't fancy being launched into space!
What's the best thing about science?
I love the magic of science! It's great to watch the experiments delivered by our expert teachers and leave fascinated to find out more!
What's the best thing about working at the National Space Academy?
The most rewarding part is the impact we have on the people we work with. Being able to inspire students and support teachers, and knowing we’re helping to shape future ambitions, makes the work truly meaningful.
