Steps into the space sector: our latest careers conference

In March of this year, the National Space Academy hosted a careers conference aimed at anyone with an interest in joining the space sector, or in exploring a career change within it. Lorna Palmer, our Business Development Manager, ran the event and shares her thoughts on the day...

Although the Academy has many years of experience running careers events for secondary students, this one was something of a milestone for us: our first which was open to the public and to all ages. We had a great mix of people attending, including students learning about ways into the industry as well as current space sector workers looking for a change. Thanks to funding from the UK Space Agency, we were able to run this event at no cost to attendees, making this an accessible entry point to begin exploring the space sector.

During the day, participants attended talks by current industry experts, who kindly gave their time for free and shared their own career journeys and routes into the sector. Participants also had the opportunity to network one-to-one with a variety of local space companies, giving them the chance to ask questions and discover more about Leicestershire’s thriving space industry.

Companies that volunteered to come along and share their expertise included Druck, a world class supplier of pressure sensor equipment, ITP Aero, who specialise in aerospace propulsion, and Space Careers UK, a leading jobs and advice service provider. It was wonderful to have such a range of perspectives, specialisms and experiences to share with our participants and we’re so grateful to all who gave their time!

We’re thrilled by the success of the conference, with one participant saying: “The event staff were really nice, and super helpful in guiding me to the different rooms. Everyone appeared super nice. I especially enjoyed the talk by Third Planet Orbital and the NSA.”

Another attendee described the day as “A great event. Nice to meet real scientists who have done the job. Thank you so much for this event.”

And finally, we were delighted by this comment from a participant who said: “Thanks for committing time and taking the effort to host the event - Creating something with such an accessible barrier to entry is a great approach, and I wish you success in your future events”
