Since 2012, in partnership with Loughborough College, the National Space Academy has been delivering a unique and innovative full-time post 16 course. The course is a perfect blend of academic theory and hands on learning, with space contexts, specialist lectures and work experience embedded throughout the course.

Students study A-levels in mathematics and physics and a BTEC National Level 3 120 credit diploma in Engineering – graduating with the equivalent of 4 A-levels. Some students have even selected to study an A-level in further mathematics alongside this!

We have also developed variations of this course that can be run with other schools or colleges.

Graduates of the course have gone on to some of the top aeronautical and space courses at university and industrial Higher Apprenticeships at companies such as Airbus Defence and Space and Rolls-Royce. We now have alumni who are settled into roles as pilots, systems engineers, academic researchers, teachers and lawyers.

The main features of the course are:

  • A-level physics
  • A-level mathematics
  • 2 A-level equivalent BTEC in Engineering including group project
  • Regular masterclasses at the National Space Centre consolidating and expanding upon their class work
  • Space and aerospace focused work experience opportunities
  • Trips to leading UK space industry sites
  • Space focused engineering group project
  • Rocket club – designing, building and launching model rockets
  • Additional enhancement activities such as entering engineering competitions or taking part in unique research opportunities to build skills.
