Crew Member of the Anglo Soviet Juno Mission, 1991

Dr Helen Sharman became Britain's first astronaut when she launched into space as a crew member of the Anglo Soviet Juno Mission on the 18th of May 1991.

 Before her spaceflight, Helen gained a degree in Chemistry at the University of Sheffield. She started her career working in electronics and confectionery industries.

After training in Star City near Moscow, Helen flew to the Mir Space Station, spending eight days in space conducting various experiments.

Helen became a Science Communicator and Corporate Speaker before beginning a new career in management, first at the National Physical Laboratory and now as the Faculty Technical Manager for Science, Engineering and Computing at Kingston University.
