This masterclass is for BTEC and applied science students. The masterclass uses the scenario of needing to look for a new home in our Solar System.

Key ideas from each of the main sciences are explored through experiments, allowing plenty of scope for students to road test their ideas, building their confidence as scientists. The context used is not only space exploration, but earth observation and the protection of the environment.

Project ideas for coursework will also be provided to participants and their teachers.

Topics covered include:

  • The role of scientists
  • Climate change – causes and effects
  • Human impact on the environment and interdependence
  • Rocket science – speed calculations, endothermic and exothermic reactions, balancing equations
  • Conditions in space and on planets in our Solar System
  • Our place in the Universe
  • The electromagnetic spectrum
  • New materials and rocket design
  • The search for life on other planets
